The nearest entrance to the city walls from the train station is Porta San Pietro, itself just a short hop to the leafy Piazza Napoleone (also known as Piazza Grande) along Via V. Veneto. Those arriving by bus can reach the square by taking Via V. Emanelle II just in front of the bus station. To the left of the square is the Palazzo Ducale, site of the first of Lucca’s three tourist information points, a vast edifice built by Bourbon rulers in the early 19th century as an attempt to give some “air” to the tight medieval structure of the town at that time. They also created the passegiata delle mura along the city walls (see below), reworked the streets around the amphitheater and established the Orto Botanico along the eastern walls.
